Hair Transplantation

Men and women can attain a natural, soft hairline with our state-of-the-art mini and micro graft techniques. Revolutionary advances in the field of hair restoration have ended the era of hair pieces and hair "plugs." Sophisticated methods of restoring natural, growing hair are now available. Patients are thrilled with the procedure and their "new look." Hair transplantation is performed in our office surgical suite.

Why Do Hair Transplants Work?

Because hair is genetically programmed at the root or hair follicle, some hair lasts for a lifetime. The hair in the donor fringe area provides the basis for surgical restoration. These hairs, when transplanted into thinning or bald areas take root and grow, and continue to grow for the rest of the person's life. The success of hair transplantation depends on the fact that transplanted hair follicles (roots moved from their original location to another area), will behave as they did in their original site.

The "No-Hairline" Hairline

When hair transplant surgery was introduced in the 1950's it often resulted in unnatural results since large donor "plugs" were transplanted giving the person a corn-row appearance that was easily recognizable as being a hair transplant. Through state-of-the-art technology, surgical hair restoration has become a highly sophisticated procedure that is easy on the patient.

The development of mini & micro graft techniques, as well as new instrumentation, enable Dr. Narins to recreate a natural hairline. The hairline is the most critically evaluated area of hair restoration as people see and notice it first.

New Hairlines Are Soft and Natural

Improved harvesting methods permit the surgeon to make the most efficient use of donor areas while providing the best cosmetic results in this area. The introduction of smaller grafts has afforded tremendous flexibility in distributing natural hair evenly. The new grafts contain between one and five hairs. At the front of the hairline Dr. Narins uses single hair and two hair grafts which mimic the natural hair growth in this area produceing a soft natural hairline. Mini and micro grafts are also less noticeable during the initial period following transplantation. Large numbers of grafts are done in each session to give a natural look quickly.

Micrografting is especially suited to women because it allows the placing of grafts in between thinning areas without removing potentially long-lasting hairs. This results in increased hair density without sacrificing any hair at all. Varied sizes and shapes can be used as required to increase overall fullness.

Scalp Reductions

Hair transplantation alone does not always provide desired coverage for patients experiencing more extensive forms of baldness. In such cases, hair transplantation can be combined with other techniques to provide the necessary coverage and density. Scalp reductions are helpful in patients where the bald area is too large for the available donor to supply enough grafts. Then a portion of the bald scalp is removed. This allows more efficient use of an irreplaceable commodity; the donor hair.

Laser Surgery

A new type of laser, the C02 UltraPulse, is being evaluated for its use in hair transplantation. Dr. Narins has over fifteen years experience working with laser surgery and has spent time in Toronto and Washington, D.C. working with the latest version of this laser which is available in our office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few questions that patients interested in hair transplantation often ask Dr. Narins.

Who Qualifies for Hair Restoration Surgery?

Most healthy men and women qualify for hair restoration surgery.

How Long will it Take to Recover From Surgery?

Hair restoration surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in the office. Most patients return to normal activities in one to four days depending on the type of surgery and the patient's occupation and activity level.

Is Hair Restoration Surgery Expensive?

The total cost depends on the extent of baldness and the number of procedures required to produce the desired result. Dr. Narins' fee is per session and not based on the number of grafts per session. Since large numbers of grafts are placed with the mini and micrograft technique we can transplant as many grafts as necessary. We will discuss costs during our initial consultation.

New Advances in Hair Loss for Post and Perimenopausal Women

Finastride, a testosterone blocker that has been used in the field of urology for over 15 years does help treay of male pattern baldness. By blocking the natural hormone that leads to hair loss, Finastride can promote hair growth on the scalp. Although originally meant for use in men, Finastride can also be taken orally by non-childbearing women and has shown significant efficacy. Virtually free of side effects, the drug may potentially halt the progression and partially reverse typical androgenetic or male/female pattern baldness.
